Having started and run several of my own businesses, and having helped lead one of them – online financial services pioneers Avantia Insurance Ltd – through a very successful private equity-backed MBO, I have found a new passion in working alongside owners and leadership teams of smaller businesses to help them start, grow, change or face whatever challenge might need to be overcome.

My story is your story

Whether it’s as a start-up facing those crucial questions of finance, confidence and “what if’s”, or an established small business experiencing the pains that so many small businesses go through, the chances are I have faced the same issues.

I always think that running your own business is like a small boat on the sea – always at the mercy of the conditions around it, never seemingly in control – while other cargo ships and cruise liners effortlessly carve their way through the same 25ft waves.

Life feels even harder if you’re the solo skipper of that boat.

What is easy to forget is just how adaptable, manoeuvrable and resilient small businesses can be, and how each passing storm teaches us more about ourselves, our businesses and the market, than the crew of a cargo ship could ever hope to know.

We’ve all had suppliers crucial to the survival of our businesses that have called us up one day to let us know they’re not going to be around any more, or a benign, supportive market turn into the most hostile environment imaginable, or key staff deciding to move on.

As the leader of a small business, it is much simpler to change direction and plot a way out of the storm into calmer waters. It is also absolutely the case that you can change the nature of what you do, possibly just subtly, to take full advantage of what the new market conditions are offering – much more so than trying to change the hearts and minds of private and institutional investors, shareholders, customers, suppliers and the thousands of staff that come with big business.

Where I come in is in being your navigator – never the captain – but someone to stand by your side who knows the waters around you, helping you and your business to make the right decisions to lead you into, or back into, growth, profitability and business health and happiness.

If my skills and experience sound like something that could be of benefit to you, simply schedule a free intro call and let’s see what we can do together.

PLUS – Unlimited small business experience is only a short step away

As an accredited member of the UK’s largest network of award-winning independent small business advisers, if we discover together that there are issues that I don’t have the experience to help with, I can tap directly into a network of 200 like-minded small business professionals all over the UK with established expertise in everything from raising finance, health & safety, financial support through grants, employment law and everything in-between.
